A recent interview with Andrew Stanton, tour-de-force behind Pixar's ridiculously high-grossing animated films, has likened Wall-E to [a less foul mouthed?] R2-D2 ... with no mention of the popular Charlie Chaplin comparison. He discusses his love of Sci-Fi films from the late 60's through mid 80's, basically from Kubrick's re-invigoration of the genre to Spielberg and Lucas running it into the ground with their too-cool-for-school blockbusters.
Also, Alien(s).
So it seems Wall-E has a little Star Child in there, though with the environmental message we thought we'd be more likely to hear about Klaatu. Which Lucas yoinked for SW, so it all comes round at the end.
